Overview: Since opening in June 2018, Jessica’s House has served 29 residents and their families. Jessica’s House provides a comfortable, peaceful and supportive setting for residents and their loved ones on their end of life journey. In house bereavement counselling is also available for family members.
One Family’s Experience: Coming from Holland with a suitcase full of emotions… would we be on time? How will we find her? Will we be shocked or… but there she sat, all dressed up and excited to meet us!
Her beautiful room, the loving care, the extra attention to small details like hand washing her cups and saucers, cooking her favourite food, allowing us to be her children – like singing before she went to sleep, the walks through the garden – made it all so special. Our family felt at home. (Family of Siemie Tiesma, Henk and Afien Kloosterhof-Tiesma, Appingedam from Holland and Leo and Yvonne Weverink from Exeter.)
Jessica’s House Volunteers: Our current team of 57 trained volunteers are the friendly voice on the phone, the smiling face at the reception desk, the person folding laundry, preparing meals, cleaning and much more. Our volunteer team has given more than 1800 hours of their time to ensure Jessica’s House is a peaceful ‘home away from home’ for our residents and their families. We are actively recruiting new volunteers. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a volunteer please e-mail [email protected].
The Driving Forces: The two driving forces behind Jessica’s House, the South Huron Hospital Foundation and the Jessica’s House Board of Directors have now been organized into one Governance Board and one Operations Committee. This structure aligns nicely with the Hospice Palliative Care Ontario accreditation standards and allows for coordination on projects, events and fundraising initiatives. If you are interested in joining our Operations Committee, please e-mail [email protected].
